Can You Fly After Botox® treatment?
In today’s article, Prof Dr Morthy, the Course Director of International Institute of Wellness & Aesthetic Medicine will discuss whether a patient can fly after botox treatment.
Are you jetting off on holiday this summer but wondering what that means for your recent or upcoming Botox® treatment ? This blog post will tell you all you need to know!
Is it safe to fly after Botox injections?
A drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, Botulinum Toxin or Botox is prominently used as a treatment to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the upper areas of the face, elevate the eyebrows as well as treat common problems such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), lichen simplex, pompholyx and acne vulgaris.
As a muscle relaxant or neuromodulator, Botox has an anti-wrinkle effect through its mechanism of action on the neuromuscular junction which causes relaxation of facial muscles thereby reducing facial wrinkles like frown lines, crow’s feet at the side of the eyes, wrinkles around the mouth, nasolabial folds and smoothing out neck and chest wrinkles.
There are some concerns that changes in cabin pressure during a flight taken soon after Botulinum Toxin treatment tends to have unwanted side effects. As well as the precipitation of bleeding and bruising, changes in cabin pressure may theoretically cause the injected Botulinum Toxin to migrate from the original site, potentially resulting in an undesirable, asymmetrical or unbalanced appearance. These concerns, however, are not proven scientifically and it varies from person to person.
Patients can expect to start noticing changes in their facial movements around 4-5 days after Botulinum Toxin treatment however it is important to note that it can take up to two weeks for Botulinum Toxin to fully relax the target muscles and start smoothing out lines and wrinkles. Therefore, those wanting to look as refreshed and youthful as possible whilst on holiday should schedule their Botulinum Toxin treatment at least 1 week prior to jetting off.
Another key factor patients and their Aesthetic practitioners should consider on this topic is the risk of late-onset side effects and complications and the potential need for further assessment and treatment. Although serious late-onset complications occur very rarely, some Aesthetic practitioners may advise staying within the local vicinity of the Aesthetic clinic up to 1-2 weeks after treatment so that any problems can be addressed safely and efficiently. This also gives the opportunity for top-up treatment if required.
In short, it is always best to schedule Botulinum Toxin treatments in advance and if possible, wait at least a week before flying after the treatment procedure. This will allow the patient to achieve the best results from the aesthetic treatments, give any swelling or bruising time to go down, and reduce the chance of experiencing complications that cannot be easily treated while travelling to another place.
